Diplomat Attempts to Light Shoe on Fire on Plane, Subdued
A man was subdued by a federal air marshal yesterday evening for attempting to light his shoe on fire on United Airlines flight 663. The plane, a Boeing 757 with over 150 passengers onboard, was headed to Denver, Colorado from Washington D.C.
The incident comes only three months after Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab failed to attack a transatlantic flight on Christmas Day of last year.
It was revealed today that the man was just trying to catch a quick smoke. Ali Bin Fahad Al-Hajri, a Qatari diplomat, had gone into the airplane lavatory in order to smoke a cigarette. Confusion ensued when he tried to put out his cigarette on his shoe, creating the appearance that he was attempting to light his shoe on fire.
Authorities searched Al-Hajri and found no explosives. He will not be convicted because of his diplomatic immunity
