And, Yet Again, the Mastery of Bill Clinton…
Meek was never going to drop out of the Florida Senate race. Clinton knew this, and he didn’t care. Whether or not the former President actually had the capacity to pull Meek’s name from the ballot was entirely outside the purview of his intentions.
Clinton—who, sadly enough, Meek considers a relatively close personal friend—can’t, for obvious political reasons, endorse anyone other than Congressman Meek. The closest Clinton could come to throwing his weight behind another candidate was the proverbial wink or two and, perhaps, a nudge.
Well, Florida voters, consider yourselves decisively both winked and nudged.
Clinton’s slight of hand was sly and nothing shy of skillful. The media has been abuzz with the possibility that Meek might, in fact, pull himself out of the race at the former President’s behest. He won’t, but the idea that Clinton would like him to is now well known. And from who, if not Clinton himself, should Florida Democrats take their voting cues? The message is simple, and, it would appear, straight from the former President’s mouth: Democrats in Florida should vote for Charlie Crist because, frankly, Meek doesn’t have a shot.
Will this keep Rubio from winning? Probably not. But, as always, well played Mr. Clinton. Like him or not, Bill Clinton is a nothing less than a strategic luminary, and, yet again, the mastery of the former President is proved in the political sphere…
