The Token Republican: Live Blogging Election Day
10:30pm – It hasn’t been fun watching CNN, FOX, and the Daily Show all announce Obama’s victory. All I can say is, I hope America ends up being right.
10:28pm – With the election called, Florida, Virginia, Nevada, and Colorado no longer matter. If Romney wins the first three, my prediction will be right at least.
10:26pm – Well there is a lot to report. Dems held onto the Senate and the Presidency. Barack Obama has surpassed the 270 electoral vote mark as he is projected to win Ohio, Wisconsin, and Iowa.
10:04pm – Going to watch the Daily Show until Florida is called. Get a little liberal humor.
10:00pm – California, Washington, and Hawaii to Obama. Romney picks up 7 more electoral votes by winning Idaho and Montana.
9:58pm – Romney pulling ahead in North Carolina, 97% in and he is up 3%. Anxiously waiting for the 11pm est polls close.
9:50pm – CNN calls Minnesota to Obama and Arizona to Romney. Both states repeated their 2008 choices.
9:46pm – Special WUPR report that Democrat Brad Schneider won Illinois 10, turning the district blue for the 1st time in 32 years.
9:45pm – Obama is up 16,000 votes in Florida. Obama still has votes remaining in the Southeast to bump his lead.
9:38pm – Minnesota to Obama. CNN hasn’t announced it yet, but I have a reliable source. Not a surprise that Obama won anyways.
9:31pm – Just saw that the Dems won Indiana in the Senate. Clearly Mourdock’s comments about abortion and rape affected his electability. Hopefully, Republicans will learn!
9:30pm – North Carolina down to the wire. Romney up 1% with 94% of precincts reporting. This is another must win for Mitt.
9:28pm – Obama down 3% early in Wisconsin. More likely than not that he pulls ahead.
9:23pm- James Carvillle, “I’m looking at Florida, Florida, and Florida.” Absolutely right. 87% of the vote in with Obama ahead by 46,000 votes. If Obama hangs on, this is the dagger to Romney’s presidential hopes.
9:15pm – Dems hold onto Missouri and Ohio in the Senate. Orrin Hatch is reelected in Utah.
9:14pm – Factor in the remaining safe states, Obama is up 225 to 168
9:11pm – Romney is up an equal 4% in Virginia. However, some heavily Democratic areas have not reported in big numbers yet.
9:07pm – Pennsylvania for Obama too. Utah to Romney. No surprises there. Romney was stupid to think he had a shot at Pennsylvania, but its a bad sign that Obama is up 4% in Ohio with 49% of precincts reporting.
9:05pm – New Hampshire called for Obama. The state definately leaned blue, but Romney had a long shot chance at taking these 4 electoral votes. Not going to be a game changer most likely.
9:00pm- Took a quick break and saw that Elizabeth Warren beat Scott Brown in MA. Huge win for the Dems. I am incredibly upset with the result of this election. Scott Brown was a model Republican. Clearly one of the few willing to work with people on the other side of the aisle. But for Republicans, Scott Brown stood as the key vote to block Obamacare (which was passed by other political maneuvers) and the first glimspe of conservatism in the state that is dominated by Democrats.
8:30pm – Florida within 1000 votes. Watch Broward and Miami-Dade counties. These areas should overwhelmingly go for Obama
8:27pm – Pennsylvania is only 15% in, but Obama holds a commanding lead. I’m curious to see if most of the ballots already counted come from Democratic strongholds such as Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.
8:23pm – Many Senate races just called. GOP wins in Texas, Mississippi, and Nebraska
8:07pm – CNN calls a GOP majority in the House of Representatives. No surprise once again, but at least Republicans will still be able to provide checks and balances assuming Obama is reelected.
7:59pm – 9pm EST polls closed. Romney picks up Kansas, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Mississippi, Louisiana, Wyoming, and Texas. Obama wins New York, Michigan, and New Jersey. Romney still leads, but we have yet to account for the West Coast and many swing states.
7:45pm – Alabama called for Romney. No surprise there.
7:38pm – Virginia poll numbers show Romney with a double digit lead. However, many of the traditional Democratic strongholds have not been counted yet
7:32pm – Romney is trailing in both Florida and Ohio. If he loses either state, we might as well stop watching.
7:31pm – Romney projected to win Arkansas and Tennessee. Romney takes a 73-64 electoral vote lead over Obama
7:30pm – I would’ve liked to announce my projection for the 2012 election before any states were announced. However, none of the states that have been called have been shockers. So, without further adieu, here are my predictions:
President: Barack Obama (281) defeats Mitt Romney (257)
Senate: Democrats and Independents (52) to Republicans (48)
House: GOP retains majority with ~240 seats
7:19pm – Just sat down, turned on the TV, and quite a few states have already been called. No surprises though, as Romney has won Georgia, Oklahoma, Indiana, Kentucky, and West Virginia. So far, the President has won his home state of Illinois in addition to Rhode Island, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maryland and Delaware.
